A study of publication trajectories of the Brazilian Computer Science community Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALBERTINI,MARCELO K.; BACKES,ANDRÉ R.; SÁ,ADRIANO L. DE.
Abstract: The average faculty productivity have been described as a rapid rise-short peak-gradual decline pattern. Way et al. (2017) have studied this pattern for faculty careers in Computer Science in North America using a piecewise linear model. In this paper, we use a similar methodology and study trajectories (N = 20655) of the Brazilian Computer Science community. First, we have evaluated how the median publication count of researchers is related to institution prestige and public vs. private administration. Second, we have studied how the annual publication rates have increased and its variation according to prestige ranks of institutions. Third, we have found the average trajectory can indeed be described as the canonical rapid increase and slower...

A study on changes of the resting-state brain function network in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment BJMBR
Min,Jun; Zhou,Xu-Xin; Zhou,Feng; Tan,Yu; Wang,Wei-Dong.
This study aimed to explore the structural and functional characteristics of the neural network of resting-state brain activities in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology. Resting state fMRI scanning was performed on 10 clinically diagnosed aMCI patients and 10 healthy volunteers, and the difference in the resting-state brain activities between aMCI patients and healthy volunteers was compared using the brain function network regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis method. Results of the ReHo analysis of aMCI patients and healthy volunteers revealed that the ReHo value significantly increased in the posterior cingulate gyrus region, medial frontal lobe, medial cortex of the...

A systematic scoping review of the genetic ancestry of the Brazilian population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Souza,Aracele Maria de; Resende,Sarah Stela; Sousa,Taís Nóbrega de; Brito,Cristiana Ferreira Alves de.
Abstract The genetic background of the Brazilian population is mainly characterized by three parental populations: European, African, and Native American. The aim of this study was to overview the genetic ancestry estimates for different Brazilian geographic regions and analyze factors involved in these estimates. In this systematic scoping review were included 51 studies, comprehending 81 populations of 19 states from five regions of Brazil. To reduce the potential of bias from studies with different sampling methods, we calculated the mean genetic ancestry weighted by the number of individuals. The weighted mean proportions of European, African, and Native American ancestries were 68.1%, 19.6%, and 11.6%, respectively. At the regional level, the highest...

A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil Acta Botanica
Eggers,Lilian; Marchioretto,Rafaella; Souza-Chies,Tatiana T.; Chauveau,Olivier.
ABSTRACT A taxonomic synopsis of Cypella (Iridaceae) in Brazil is presented with recognition of 16 species, two of them represented by two subspecies. An identification key to the taxa is provided and species are described and illustrated. New synonyms are indicated, and eight lectotypes, two epitypes and one neotype are designated. Results include distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, notes and examined specimens of all taxa, as well as comments on dubious and misused names. The resulting framework revealed that most of the Brazilian species of Cypella occur in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and in the Pampa Biome, although Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG) is the most species-rich biogeographic unit of the genus.

A taxonomical study of benthic Prorocentrum species (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) from Anse Dufour (Martinique Island, eastern Caribbean Sea) ArchiMer
Chomérat, Nicolas; Bilien, Gwenael; Zentz, Frédéric.
About 30 benthic Prorocentrum species have been described, some of which producing okadaic acid and derivatives involved in diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. The western Caribbean has been extensively studied for benthic dinoflagellates associated with ciguatera, and fifteen Prorocentrum species were described from mangroves and coral reefs of Belize. In contrast, no study reported the diversity of this genus in the Eastern Caribbean, especially in the Lesser Antilles. This study adds to the biodiversity knowledge in Martinique Island by investigating one site of the Caribbean coast from 2010 to 2017. Sediment samples were collected each year in March and studied taxonomically. Identification was realized morphologically by scanning electron microscopy,...

A Three‐way Balance in The Beaufort Gyre: The Ice‐Ocean Governor, Wind Stress, and Eddy Diffusivity ArchiMer
Doddridge, Edward W.; Meneghello, Gianluca; Marshall, John; Scott, Jon; Lique, Camille.
The Beaufort Gyre (BG) is a large anticyclonic circulation in the Arctic Ocean. Its strength is directly related to the halocline depth, and therefore also to the storage of freshwater. It has recently been proposed that the equilibrium state of the BG is set by the Ice‐Ocean Governor, a negative feedback between surface currents and ice‐ocean stress, rather than a balance between lateral mesoscale eddy fluxes and surface Ekman pumping. However, mesoscale eddies are present in the Arctic Ocean; it is therefore important to extend the Ice‐Ocean Governor theory to include lateral fluxes due to mesoscale eddies. Here, a non‐linear ordinary differential equation is derived that represents the effects of wind stress, the Ice‐Ocean Governor, and eddy fluxes....

A two-dimensional analytical model of vertical water entry for asymmetric bodies with flow separation ArchiMer
Hascoët, Romain; Jacques, Nicolas; Scolan, Yves-marie; Tassin, Alan.
The vertical water entry of asymmetric two-dimensional bodies with flow separation is considered. As long as there is no flow separation, linearised Wagner's theory combined with the modified Logvinovich model has been shown to provide computationally fast and reliable estimates of slamming loads during water entry. Tassin et al. [11] introduced the fictitious body continuation (FBC) concept as a way to extend the use of Wagner's model to separated flow configurations, but they only considered symmetric bodies. In the present study, we investigate the ability of the FBC concept to provide accurate estimates of slamming loads for asymmetric bodies. In this case, flow separation may not occur simultaneously on both sides of the body. During an intermediate...

Abiotic effects on the cover and richness of corticolous lichens on Araucaria angustifolia trunks Acta Botanica
Nunes,Lucas; Burle,Giulia; Gumboski,Emerson Luiz; Dechoum,Michele.
ABSTRACT Lichens play a key role in natural ecosystems, as they can function as primary producers, recycle minerals and fix nitrogen. Despite their environmental importance, little is known about lichen ecology in Brazil, and especially about how abiotic factors may influence their spatial distribution. In this study, we aimed to verify how the cover and richness of corticolous lichens on Araucaria angustifolia trunks vary between two different habitats (Forest and Grassland). The photoquadrat sampling method was applied to A. angustifolia trunks. The Coral Point Count software with Excel extensions (CPCe) was used to analyze photographs for lichen cover and richness. Additionally, a redundancy analysis was conducted to estimate how five abiotic and two...

Abortion in association with transplacental Theileria equi infection in a mare from the State of Espírito Santo, southeast Brazil: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,A.R.; Pinheiro,G.R.G.; Souza,T.D.; Flecher,M.C.; Santos,R.L..
ABSTRACT Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the protozoan parasites Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. We report a case of abortion in association with transplacental Theileria equi infection in a mare from the State of Espírito Santo, southeast Brazil. An apparently healthy mare aborted at the tenth month of gestation. At necropsy, the subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscles, and visible mucosae of the aborted fetus were pale, and there was moderate hydrothorax and marked splenomegaly. Microscopic findings included splenic lymphoid hyperplasia and nephrosis. Merozoite-infected erythrocytes were found within blood vessels of all organs examined and were most numerous in the brain. DNA extracted from the spleen, liver, kidney, and thymus...

Abscisic acid and the antioxidant system are involved in germination of Butia capitata seeds Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Santos,Talita R. Silva dos; Garcia,Queila Souza.
ABSTRACT Seed germination is an important step for plants without vegetative propagation and is a physiological process that begins with specific environmental cues resulting in biochemical responses. Breaking-dormancy is necessary to study germination in dormant seeds with asynchronous germination. We investigated the processes of breaking dormancy and germination of Butia capitata (Arecaceae) seeds, in which germination is slow and asynchronous, by operculum removal. This treatment increased germination of B. capitata to 90 %. Embryos of dry, imbibed, 24-hours post-operculum removal and early-germinated seeds were collected for biochemical analysis of the following: quantification of abscisic acid (ABA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), activities of...
